Diet for Diabetics: The Right Road to Living Healthy

Diet For Diabetics? Why?

Understand why there is a special need for a diabetes diet. Diabetes occurs when the body is not able to control the amount of sugar in the blood. It is either that too little insulin is produced by the pancreas to control the sugar, or the cells do not respond well to the insulin produced. The amount of sugar taken in must be reduced.

Certain carbohydrate foods (we call them “bad carbs”) are hazardous to your health as they convert to sugar and will send your blood sugar dangerously high. It is therefore in your best interest to establish a healthy eating pattern.


 

Foods You Can Trust

Seek to stay within the range of foods that are always recommended for a healthy diet.

Go for Good Carbohydrates

Food in this category easily converts to sugar when they get in the body. You have to be selective about carbs that you eat therefore as some are high in calories and will cause weight gain. Processed carbohydrates in the form of ice cream, cakes, donuts and other such condiments should be avoided.

Eat carbs that occur naturally in vegetables, grains, and cooked dry beans and peas.Instead of eating cornflakes with additives, use whole grain corn for a good porridge meal. Go for an orange instead of sweetened orange juice from off the shelf. Eat more whole grain bread, brown rice, yam, lentils and beans.

 

Be Selective about Protein 

Protein is an excellent food source for energy and cell repair. Like other food sources however, you need to make healthy choices. The best protein sources are those occurring in plants, fish and seafood, chicken and other poultry, and cheese and eggs. If you want to go for plant-based protein, select from beans, lentils, humus, soy nuts, and nuts.

Having fish at least two times a week is an excellent choice. Eat especially those with omega 3 fatty acids including tuna, herring, mackerel, rainbow trout, sardines, and salmon. Other protein meats are very nutritious. Only be careful to select lean meats that will not increase cholesterol levels, or contribute to weight gain. Select beef, pork, lamb, and veal without fat.

 

Healthy Fats are good

You cannot leave out fats that provide your body with energy and heat. Every diet for diabetics should take this important element into account. Fish such as mackerel, trout and halibut are rich in Omega-3 fatty acid.

Other excellent sources of fat are avocado, peanut, walnut, almond, olives, and seeds. Be mindful however, that these foods do add calories and should be taken only in modest amounts.

 

Fruits and Vegetables at every Meal

Apart from the vitamins that you will get to build your immune system, eat plenty of fruits and veggies for fiber. Substitute them for much of the carbs you may be tempted to eat as they are low in sodium and sugars.
